Today, we are celebrating one of the most exceptional scholars to grace our program. Joe Afful was awarded a four-year scholarship totaling $340,000.00 to pursue his undergraduate education at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Read More About Joe’s Journey:
For Joe, the journey has always been overcoming all odds to achieve whatever he sets his mind to accomplish. As a natural introvert, Joe has always preferred to let his achievements do all the talking. Throughout his high school education at St. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast, he overcame several personal insecurities to emerge as one of the best students in his class. He led his school to win the prestigious National Science & Maths Quiz Ghana in 2019, outclassing some of the best students in the nation. Despite his impressive accolades, his dream of pursuing education at a world-class institution had to wait for three more years.
After being selected as one of 28 out of 600+ applicants into YAF Ghana’s competitive Scholars program in 2022, Joe spent numerous hours each week reading advanced literature across diverse disciplines, participating in team-building activities, collaborating with his cohorts in tackling challenging problems in local communities, and participating in volunteer tutoring. At YAF, he capitalized on all the resources we made available to him to excel in his SAT examination and finally achieve his dream of gaining admission to the Caltech.
Joe has many reasons for pursuing higher education in the STEM field—one such reason fueling his passion is his family’s genetic predisposition to glaucoma. In the future, he hopes to combine his interests in the physical sciences and medicine to explore novel approaches to researching neurodegenerative diseases.
