A Spark of Inspiration

Growing up in Ahwiaa, Majeed always had a passion for technology and problem-solving, but the idea of studying in the United States wasn’t on his radar—until a pivotal moment in his final year at Prempeh College. A presentation by an alumnus, Dr. Adutwum, introduced him to the vast opportunities that U.S. colleges could offer, sparking his interest in studying abroad.

After winning the National Science and Maths Quiz Competition (NSMQ) with Prempeh College, a friend introduced him to YAF Ghana, an organization that would soon become more than just a college prep program—it became a family.

“Before YAF Ghana, I had worked with a few other organizations on college applications, but YAF Ghana was different. It felt less like just an organization and more like a family, growing together and supporting each other toward a common goal.” – Majeed

The YAF Ghana Experience: A Life-Changing Journey

From SAT preparation, essay writing, and financial aid applications to transitioning to the U.S., Majeed describes YAF Ghana as a pillar of support every step of the way. The two-week boot camp on transitioning from Ghana to the U.S. helped make the move smoother—though not without its challenges.

Now, as a sophomore at Williams College, Majeed has embraced the opportunities and challenges that come with being an international student. The excitement of meeting people from all over the world, experiencing different cultures, and adjusting to new social norms (and of course, the food! 😅) have all shaped his journey.

Beyond academics, he has immersed himself in campus life, actively participating in the Williams African Students Association and ColorStack, a community for Black and Latinx students in tech. His engagement with the YAF Ghana alumni network also played a crucial role in helping him land a prestigious summer internship as a Software Engineering Intern at Bloomberg in New York City. 🚀

Paying It Forward & Inspiring the Next Generation

For Majeed, giving back is not just a choice—it’s a responsibility.

“If there’s one thing YAF Ghana has taught me, it’s the importance of giving back to the community. I am forever grateful for the unwavering support YAF Ghana provided me, at no cost, and I constantly look for ways to pay it forward.”

Through the YAF Ghana Alumni Mentorship Program, he has dedicated his time to mentoring and guiding students, ensuring that others have the same opportunities that transformed his own life. While he continues to explore ways to use technology as a tool for social impact, one thing is certain—his journey is only just beginning.

A Message to Aspiring Scholars

“Looking back, YAF Ghana is more than just an organization—it’s a family, and it always will be. To the current students, the journey will never be easy, but it was never meant to be. Keep putting in the work, trust yourself, and trust the staff—things will eventually fall into place.”
